I have been through several Fire HD tablets for my two oldest children in the last several years.

My reasons I believe this is the BEST Amazon kid tablet you can get for a toddler or young child:

What is the difference between the Fire HD Kids and the Fire HD Kids Pro?

The tech specs on the tablet are the same.

The main differences between the two are a more streamlined less childish case on the pro, and more content access.

Kids have access to a digital store where they can request access to items and parents can approve it.

One thing I have always loved about the Fire tablets is all the parental control.

I admit the Fire HD Pro is very appealing looking, and the updated content for ages 6-12 is probably better for my older children going forward.

All three of my kids currently use Kids Fire 10's but when they are ready to upgrade we will go with the Pro version.

The cost is the same but there are deals frequently so I will keep checking prices.

My son broke one of my first mirrorless cameras a few years ago when he was a tiny toddler. Once that incident occurred I knew I needed to get my children their own cameras so they would stop messing with mine.

The first to get her own camera was my oldest daughter when she was around five. Since then we have bought a few more for the other kids to share.

What makes a camera great for kids? In my opinion it's being easy to use, durable, and fun. If a camera is easy and intuitive for children it's much more fun for everyone in the family.

My favorite kids camera

My absolute favorite first camera for a young kid is any of the VTech kids cameras.

This one is a little more advanced than the one above. It says it goes up to age 9 and my 8 year old is still happy with it.

An instant camera is also super fun for kids

I have the Fujifilm Instax Mini  instant film camera and my kids LOVE it!

You can find my version here but there are many fun colors and types. Some print square pictures and others print rectangles.

Kids love being able to see their results instantly and it is a ton of fun for them to play and explore with their own instant camera.

You do have to buy film so that is something to keep in mind. These cameras have a rechargeable battery so that is nice. The one negative about the VTech for me is having to replace batteries.

Conclusion

An instant camera, or an easy to use VTech kids camera make great first cameras for children.

I have tried giving them one of my older point and shoot cameras in the past and they needed way too much help with operation to make it fun.

I think starting young children off with an easy to use and engaging first camera is the way to go. Instant or digital, your choice!

Having all these devices with cords all over the place is not attractive. If you are like me and cannot stand the mess of cords and devices all over the counter, you need a tablet organizer stand and docking station.

In our old house we used to have devices just charging wherever was convenient, and all over the place.

It wasn’t that bad when it was just my husband and me, but add in kids tablets which are usually bulky, and it looked awful. I seriously felt the need to tackle the clutter.

Adding the Fire HD Kids Tablets to everything made it get messy quickly.

One of the things I love about the Fire Kids Tablets is that they have a kid proof heavy duty case. But that case makes it hard to fit into any kind of regular charging station.

I took moving into our new home as an opportunity to get my cord and charging situation organized.

Having cords and tablets lying all over the kitchen counter was not acceptable to me in my new home.

I quickly found with some research that there are many tablet storage organizers, or tablet docking stations available. Narrowing down the best type and size can be confusing though.

Charging Station Organizers and Docking Stands

Rather than give a long list of all the different types of charging stations out there I am going to share what has worked for me.

Storage with charging built in

I originally started off with a tablet charging station organizer and it worked okay. What is nice about these is that the charging is built right in, and with short cables it can be a neat and tidy all in one solution.

Here is an example of this kind of charging station.

The problem with this for me was my kid tablets with their bulky cases did not fit in the slots. The plastic dividers are removable but when removing them to double up the space, it left much less slots for each device.

The other issue we ran into was that the plastic dividers broke over time from my kids grabbing their tablets and moving them. Eventually they all broke and a couple of the ports stopped working.

We went from having a nice charger with spacious slots to a charger with not slots and all of our devices piled up on top of it. Once the ports went I decided I needed something different.

It was an okay solution though while it lasted. If you don’t have bulky kid cases and just a normal size tablet and phones to charge this kind of charging station will probably work well.

I knew I needed something larger though for these giant 10” Fire Kids Edition tablets.

Docking stand with charger inside of it

I ended up finding a bamboo wooden stand which you can then place a charging hub inside of it. In order to keep the wires clean I purchased these little cable clip organizers to hold them in place.

So far this is working great. While it is a bigger footprint overall, it keeps everything so neat. The wood seems more sturdy and the dividers are big enough for each tablet to fit into its own slot.

Without needing to constantly move the dividers to make space I am hoping they hold up better than my previous stand.

I bought a charger to put inside of it with plenty of capacity for all of our devices.

There you have my favorite tablet organizer stand docking solution with separate charging. I have tried so many different types of chargers and this is my favorite yet. I love the clean look and that all of my bulky kid cases fit into it easily without wasting space.

Let me tell you why. I have an Echo. I didn't think I needed one, I kind of ended up with it. But now that I have it I love it.

And when I thought about what I use it for the most it's when I am entertaining guests, and this usually includes lots of kids. I have three children under six, and when it comes to them and their friends, they love to play with the Echo. They love telling it what to do and requesting music. So what do you get with a Kids Edition Echo Dot vs a regular old Echo Dot?

The main items are a year of FreeTime Unlimited. I used this with our Fire tablets and find it very worth it. It's nice not having to search for safe content and having it all in one place. There are ad free radio stations for kids included for the first year as well as Audible books for children.

The Kid edition also includes kids skills from Disney and others and special alarms for the kids. The kids protective case and the two year worry free warranty (which I have used with our Fire tablets!).

Conclusion

While you don't need a Kids Edition Echo Dot, I cannot see any downside and only positives here. Reading the reviews I see a few kinks that need to be worked out but I know from experience that Amazon will take customer feedback seriously.

First a little background on me. I spent the last 15 years working in IT so I know a little about it.

My husband and I are absolute Apple fans and I pretty much only buy their products when it comes to my personal tech. So of course I thought if I got my kid a tablet it would be an iPad, ha.

I also swore that my child wouldn’t own a tablet or phone until they were in high school…hahaha. When the point came that my three year old daughter (now a five year old) would not leave my phone or iPad alone, I decided it was time to check out my options.

While I briefly considered an iPad mini since I knew it could grow with her, I quickly dismissed that idea since 1) it’s ridiculously expensive for a three year old’s gift 2) it seemed like way more functionality and options than she needed and 3) by the time she could use all the features of a rich tablet like an iPad there will be much newer and updated versions.

So, with that it was a kid’s tablet I was in search of and after some buying and returning of various items the Fire Kids Edition is what I ended up with.

I now have three children and three Fire Kids Editions. Each version has been better than the last.

It’s affordable, for a full feature real tablet this is a bargain. It is actually a regular Fire that comes with the additional kids features.

While you can get a Fire alone I think the additional case, 2 year warranty for anything (yes anything!!) and unlimited Amazon FreeTime are worth the small additional cost for the kids version.

Size

The size and weight of the Fire is perfect for children. Not too big but also not small.

It has multiple profiles you can set up. So multiple children can use it and I can even use it to read my Kindle books when I do not have my Kindle with me.

Parental controls

Easy to use parental controls, I can manage everything including what my kids access, how long they can use it, and create educational goals.

Battery

The battery life seems very comparable to other devices I use and charges quickly.

Navigation

It is easy to use and navigate which is important for a toddler or small child. My daughter mastered this thing and can download what she wants (from approved content) delete items she does not want, switch between apps, use the camera and get to the home screen.

This is all great because it can be annoying when a little child is asking you to help them switch between items on a tablet every few minutes.

Durability and Warranty

It seems very durable. Despite the 2 year warranty this device has already withstood beverages, food, drops and everything else you expect from a child.

The case that it comes with is very thick and spongy and seems to work well. The screen is not covered by anything but so far, so good.

Update* I have now tested the warranty as my five year old broke her screen. I can say the process was easy as can be. I contacted Amazon and they sent me a new Kids Fire Edition and had me ship the old one back. No issues, no big deal. Can't beat that kind of service!

Camera and Apps

It has a front and rear camera that my daughter finds easy to use.

Some of her favorite games on here are educational and fun. The options available on Amazon FreeTime seem endless so there is never boredom or trouble finding a great option to download.

This includes apps, games, movies and books that have all of her beloved and well known characters as well as some new ones.

Tech Specs

Comes with Wifi and bluetooth, and there is a spot for headphones to attach.

CPU and RAM specs are good for a tablet this size.

I used to have them listed here but they have improved with every new version and change so I will leave those specs to my more detailed product reviews.

Conclusion

I hope this has helped anyone looking for a tablet for their young child. I wasn’t sure I should cross the line of getting my daughter a tablet, but years later I can say we love it and now her younger brother has his own too.

While I don’t want the screen to rule my children's lives, as parents we always worry whether we are making the right choices with a purchase like this.

I believe everything in moderation is fine, and this a wonderful device for young kids with lots of parental controls built in to give you the confidence and options to manage it all.
